State of Women in the California Democratic Party

  • Hilton Garden Inn 1000 Aguajito Road Monterey, CA, 93940 United States (map)

Join us for an exciting conversation between Delaine Eastin, candidate for Governor of California in 2018, and Mary Hughes, founder of Close The Gap CA, about empowering women within the Democratic Party. Learn how we can increase women's share of political power in our state.

Gubernatorial candidate Delaine Eastin is the only woman ever to serve as State Superintendent of Public Instruction in California. Elected to the first of her two terms in 1995, Eastin supported many groundbreaking initiatives and was the first statewide official to advocate for universal preschool and full-day kindergarten. Eastin served as a champion for public libraries, wiring schools for technology, and stronger technical and vocational training for students. She advocated tirelessly to create statewide standards and systems of accountability, ensure reduced class sizes in grades K-3, increase parental involvement and teacher training, and create overall safe and healthy school environments for every child.

Mary V. Hughes is a political strategist and President of Hughes & Company, a political consulting firm in Palo Alto, California. Mary is the founder of close the gap CA, a campaign to recruit progressive women to run for the California Legislature. She also founded and served as Director of The 2012 Project, a national, non-partisan campaign to increase the number of women in Congress and state legislatures by taking advantage of newly created districts resulting from redistricting.
