As Democrats, we believe all Californians have a right to affordable housing in reasonable proximity to where they work, study, and hold community ties.

This initiative, developed by Monterey Peninsula Renters United (MPRU), recognizes that renters are often left out of crucial conversations around local governance and leadership. By engaging renters the Democratic Women of Monterey County will more successfully bring forth the values and goals of the California Democratic Party.

#RentersVote

a targeted initiative
to mobilize & educate renters and inspire ACTIon

Why we believe #RentersVote is important:

Renters are the Majority of Residents in incorporated monterey county.

Renters Have Power and Impact.

Renters Voices Must be Heard.

Renters are transitory by nature, moving from city to city as their rents increase, therefore may not follow local politics.

As a majority of residents, renters have significant voting power and can influence and shape housing policies.

As renters move further away from their jobs and commutes are longer and there is a negative impact on our carbon footprint and the health and well-being of renters.

The net worth of the median homeowner is $231,400, more than 44 times that of the median renter, who has a net worth of just $5,200.

Since the housing bust and Great Recession, the homeownership gap between Black and white households has widened to its largest level in 50 years.

Homeownership has been out of reach for minorities, especially women. Skyrocketing rents have lead to increased homelessness.

According to a 2018 Study by ApartmentList:

  • Renters are underrepresented in American politics in a way that has serious implications on the local and national stages.

  • While renters are seldom considered a voting coalition, they make up nearly one-third of the eligible voting population, have the significant potential to swing elections, and represent a unique cross-section of the American population.

  • Thinking of renters as a voting coalition would represent a significant shift in thinking that could help shape the platforms of the nation’s major political parties.

Renters have the power to influence an election. #RentersVote will make a difference.

Candidates who gain the #RentersVote gain an advantage of getting elected and reelected.
