With Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in the White House and with mob rule at the Capitol defeated, it appeared as if Democracy had prevailed once more. But what if it all the talk of voter fraud was just a distraction from an even greater risk — one that could have handed Donald Trump a second term, despite losing the popular vote by over 7 million. After all, fewer than 80,000 votes in a few swing states gave Biden the same Electoral College margin in 2020 that Trump claimed in 2016 with a similarly small number of swing state votes and despite losing the popular vote by nearly 3 million.
This means that the final outcomes of elections with around 150 million voters ended up being almost random. Isn't there a better way?
In our next Zoom talk on the subject, Vinz Koller will discuss the National Popular Vote Compact, an elegant solution to this problem with John Koza, its architect. The Compact ensures that the candidate who receives the most popular votes nationwide receives enough electoral votes to be elected president. It takes effect when states totaling 270 electoral votes have joined; with current participation that total has reached 196.
